The Feast of St. Gregory the Great

March 12th marked the feast day of our eponymous patron. Families and friends of the Gregory the Great Academy gathered around the image of St. Gregory the Great hanging in the refectory; bread was broken, songs were sung, toasts were made. Mr. Fitzpatrick made the humorous connection between St. Gregorys’ affection for the homeless while he lived and his boundless intercession for our school. Despite the impermanence of our location, we carry on our duties with confidence in his continuous care for our needs. A day that began with Divine Liturgy, concluded again in the chapel, with the students leading Compline and night prayer. St. Gregory the Great, pray for us!

Gregory the Great Academy at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The students of the Academy celebrated St. Patrick’s Day this past weekend by participating in Scranton’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade—the second largest in the country. They sang and juggled, marching the parade route alongside bagpipes and Irish step dancing. Following the parade, the students put on several impromptu street-corner juggling shows to the cheers of parade spectators. It was an enjoyable way to commemorate the feast of such a great saint. The faculty, staff, and students of Gregory the Great Academy wish everyone a happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Robbie Burns Banquet 2015

Last Saturday, Gregory the Great Academy celebrated its annual banquet in honor of the great Scottish poet Robbie Burns. The night was filled with great food, song, and much merriment. Here are some photos of the evening, crowned by the procession of the Haggis and the Immortal Memory address which is here excerpted:

“There are holy feasts and there are hamely feasts, and it is part of a good education, a lively education, to know one from the other and how they relate to one another. Take these feasts we as a school observe, and construct a pyramid with them, or a spire, and you will discover a definite direction, or even a divine pedagogy, in our celebrations. At the apex we have Our Lady, below her, in the heavenly choirs, are the saints with Gregory and Don Bosco given special prominence, and below them, we have Robert Burns turning up the furrows of the earth that feeds us all. These are the realities, the hierarchies, the spheres, which frame our consciousness and our faith, informing and affecting our education, our lives, and our poetry—drawing us, leading our hearts on through beauty beyond the earth to higher, more beautiful places; but it is on earth and with earthly beauties that the work and even the experience of heaven must begin—on earth, as it is in heaven.”

burns2014_bookDear Friends,

Every year, the students, staff, and friends of Gregory the Great Academy come together to celebrate the rustic poetry of Robbie Burns, the great Ploughman’s Poet of Ayrshire, Scotland. The traditional Supper is marked with hamely fare, song, and poetry.

Originally our 2015 Robbie Burns Supper was scheduled to be held on January 25th. However, due to the proximity of the date to our return from the Christmas holidays, we have decided to move the banquet to Saturday, February 7th at 6:00PM.
